English Skills for Second Language Users

Based on SAQA's Unit Standard ID 119454, NQF level 2, 5 Credits

This programme is designed to meet the demands of English on the second-language user. It exposes the learners to a general upgrading of English skills. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are addressed in a participative, easy-to-understand way. The learners are led to become more confident in an English environment.

Course Objectives

This course is intended to serve as a language enrichment course as well as an introduction to the English-speaking cultural climate.

The content presented is practical and relevant to the learner's needs. For that reason, there is no curriculum cast in stone. Rather, the facilitator uses a basic core syllabus based on common errors experienced by second language users as well as basic grammar structures.

According to the needs of the learners' as well as the problems experienced during the course, the syllabus will be adapted to answer those needs and correct the errors that occur.

Underlying the content is a cognitive development methodology. The course contains functional and business language that is presented in an active, participative structure. It is both stimulating and challenging.

Should it be required, a pre- and post assessment on functional language ability can be conducted. This assessment identifies areas for improvement and measures the learner's level of functioning in a second language environment.
