Today's dynamic workplace requires individuals to broaden their skills and possess a working knowledge of business practices, principal of which is a working knowledge of finance and accounting. However, many individuals believe they have a mental block when it comes to figures and are consequently nervous to deal with financial information.

This course takes the fear out of finance by removing the myths and explaining financial and accounting concepts in a manner that is straightforward and easy to grasp. By attending this course, learners will establish a working knowledge of finance and develop a firm understanding of its role within their organisation.

They will also learn how financial information and budgets are compiled, interpreted and used to make business decisions. Furthermore, learners will acquire the skills to run budgets, monitor departmental costs and assist in the preparation of financial information.

Course Objectives

  • Remove the myths and fears about finance and understand the jargon that surrounds many financial transactions
  • Develop an understanding of the key finance and accounting terms and understand the concepts behind them
  • Learn to understand and analyse the basic elements of an income and expenditure statement and a balance sheet
  • Work more productively with colleagues from the finance department
  • Compile a personal assets and liabilities statement
  • Use evidence in financial statements to make financial decisions

PAs, executive secretaries, office managers and junior managers who want to build their skills and understanding of finance. This course will benefit individuals with little or no prior understanding of business finance.

Course Outline

Understanding the basics

  • Why do businesses need income and expenditure statements?
  • Identifying the sources of income and expenditure in different kinds of financial statements - close corporations, listed companies, partnerships, public entities, SMMEs, and sole ownerships
  • Effectively assessing the financial viability of enterprises by evaluating expenditure statements

Mastering balance sheets

  • What the balance sheet is really telling us
  • Analysing balance sheets to determine equity or financial net worth.
  • Understanding assets – current and fixed
  • Understanding liabilities - long term and current
  • Analysing and evaluating multi-year balance sheets to make inform decisions

Compiling a personal asset and liability statement

  • Drawing up a personal asset and liability statement
  • Understanding the advantages of drawing up asset and liability statements

Making decisions

  • Analysing the financial strengths and weaknesses of an enterprise to identify ways to increase income and reduce costs
  • Understanding the cost to income ratio
  • Understanding the relationship between turnover, income, revenue, sales/earnings and profit
  • Cash flow and liquidity
