Information is every organisation's most basic and essential asset, and in common with any other business asset, recorded information requires effective management. Records management ensures information can be accessed easily, can be destroyed routinely when no longer needed, and enables organisations not only to function on a day to day basis, but also to fulfil legal and financial requirements.

- Ensuring paper based documentation is classified, sorted and recorded according to
- Storing information in the correct location and sequence
- Understanding the effect that misfiled documentation has on an organisation
- Storing documents in a manner that ensured that they are undamaged, safe and accessible when required
- Accurately classifying and cross-referencing
- Understanding different methods of classification and cross-referencing
- Creating and labelling electronic files
Retrieving Information
- Locating information promptly and dispatching it to the correct person
- Communication delays in the supply of information
- Tracking files
- Identifying missing or overdue items and following the correct procedures to locate them
Storing Valuable Documentation
- Securing valuable items and maintaining security
- Identifying security risks and correcting them
- Recognising violations of security and reporting them by following established procedures
